Three Super Mario Sunshine Beta Images

SpaceWorld 2001 Build

This image (used as the reflection in Eely-Mouth's eyes) depicts Mario in Ricco Harbour circa 2001. The timeframe can be deduced by FLUDD using an early design seen in the SpaceWorld 2001 trailer, the cloud layer also seen in the SpaceWorld trailer being present and the look of Delfino Plaza there in the background, which was also ALSO used in the SpaceWorld trailer. On another note, the Bloopers sat atop the girders are different, being more pink than their final design, which is more blue-ish. Based on the structure in the background (which is where you enter Delfino Plaza from), we can deduce that Ricco Harbour used to be a LOT closer to Delfino Plaza than the final game, and that's saying something.

This image is a screenshot taken directly from the SpaceWorld 2001 trailer. The screenshot depicts Mario running through Delfino Plaza, the plaza itself using the design seen in the previous image. Something to note is the ice-cream stall in the background. It's unused in the final game, and its (also unused) animations seem to show that you could spring off of its canopy and possibly pull it around. Moving on, the HUD is very different to the final game's, shows a water meter and a Sol Coin counter. In this build, the water meter has a different (and nicer-looking, in my opinion) design to that of the final. Strangely enough, it also doubled as a health meter. The Sol Coins, which can be seen scattered around the plaza, would've been used to buy travel stamps, allowing access to new areas via an unused train system.

E3 2002 Build

This image almost seems like a recreation of the first one, depicting Mario and some Bloopers atop girders in Ricco Harbour. This is clearly a later build of the game, as evidenced by FLUDD using his final design, the HUD re-vamp and the Bloopers becoming blue. Three things to note are that one, the life meter is still not using its final design, two, the SpaceWorld cloud layer is present and three, Delfino Plaza is missing. My theory is that this screenshot was taken at a point in development where Delfino Plaza was receiving an upgrade to the design seen in the final game. So, they deleted the previous lower poly version (lower detail versions of levels that are close to the level you're in location-wise can be seen in the distance) and planned to re-model it when the design change was finished.

Under NO circumstance should you EVER replace "mariosunshine" with "obama" in the URL.
